Despite recent falls in the dollar, Toyota has cut prices on four of the five Corolla sedan variants by up to $400 while adding new equipment along with a sportier exterior and more stylish interior. The starting price for the sedan is once again below $21,000 for the face-lifted range, with the price of the Ascent manual lopped by $400 to $20,990*.
Luxury-grade Ultima sedan is the first Corolla in Australia to be powered by the two-litre, four-cylinder engine, designated 3ZR-FE.
The engine features Toyota's dual-VVT-i technology - variable valve timing on both the inlet and outlet valves - which boosts power and torque.
Maximum torque of 189Nm at 4400rpm is eight per cent higher than for the 1.8-litre engine that powers the rest of the Corolla range.
The new engine delivers its increased maximum power of 102kW earlier in the rev range at 5600rpm and improves engine response across the board.
It is matched to a new electronically controlled automatic transmission, with ratios to take advantage of the increased torque.
New Corolla Ultima gains the added safety and convenience of a reversing camera. The image, including static guidelines, is displayed on a 3.3-inch LCD screen on the interior mirror.
Ultima also receives high-intensity gas-discharge Xenon headlamps and a rear spoiler, yet its price increases just $800.
Corolla sedan's exterior facelift includes new bumpers front and rear, radiator grille, headlamps (including darkened 'smoke' finish on Conquest and Ultima grades), foglamps, rear combination lamps, reflectors and garnish, exterior mirrors and colour combinations.
Toyota has widened the lower grille and made the foglamp aperture taller to emphasise Corolla sedan's stability and low centre of gravity.
The result is a thinner, wider appearance, enhancing the horizontal presence of the front mask.
Toyota has changed the rear design to enhance the appearance of width, with enlarged and sharpened bumper corners, a wider rear garnish, thinner tail lamps and square reflectors.
Indicator lamps are now integrated into the exterior side mirrors.
Conquest has new five-spoke 16-inch alloy wheels and Ultima has new blade-design alloy wheels.
Toyota has added two new colours, Blue Metallic (Ultima) and Blue Steel.
Inside, new audios, instruments and steering wheels feature across the range.
Sound systems have MP3/WMA compatibility, USB jack, 3.5mm audio input jack, Bluetooth™ hands-free, Bluetooth™ audio streaming and i-Pod® control via the USB jack.
Ascent has a single CD player, while Conquest and Ultima have a 6-CD display-type audio with 4.3-inch thin-film transistor screen.
There is a new seat fabric in Ascent and Conquest grades, new high brightness silver-coating areas, chrome plating on the air register handles in Conquest and Ultima, new combination meters including Optitron instruments in Conquest and Ultima, new ISO-compliant symbols and new flat-bottom steering wheels.
The immobiliser system key's ID verification accuracy enhances security.
Ascent models come with two options: an enhanced safety pack (front-seat side airbags, side curtain shield airbags, driver's knee airbag) and a cruise pack (cruise control, premium steering wheel with audio controls and premium gear-shift and park brake levers).
Corolla Conquest and Ultima sedans are fitted with seven airbags as standard equipment.
All Corolla sedans are equipped with vehicle stability control and traction control.
